The short version

  • Glycinate is the form Cleveland Clinic suggests for evening use. Citrate and oxide can upset the stomach.
  • NuvaMag has 275 mg of elemental magnesium per serving, under the 350 mg a day NIH sets as the upper limit for supplements.
  • The sleep research is early. Treat magnesium as one part of an evening ritual.

Nuva means new. Zen means a positive life.

Nuvazen is built on one idea: a new beginning can start any day. Not only in January, and not after the next deadline. It can start on an ordinary evening, with something small you can repeat.

That is why we think of supplements as rituals. A magnesium you take at the same time each night can become the cue that the day is done.

Why the form of magnesium matters

Magnesium is always bound to something, and that changes how it behaves. Here is how the three common forms compare for an evening routine.

Form What to know
Oxide Cheap and common, but poorly absorbed. Mainly used as a laxative or antacid, and it can cause diarrhea.
Citrate Popular, but its laxative effect makes it a poor bedtime choice for many people.
Glycinate Magnesium bound to the amino acid glycine. Cleveland Clinic describes it as easy to absorb and gentle on the stomach, and suggests it for people trying magnesium for sleep.

An honest note on sleep

The research on magnesium and sleep is still early. Cleveland Clinic calls the evidence "thin": small studies, some people report benefit, and more research is needed. Magnesium is not a sedative or a quick fix. Think of it as one supportive piece of an evening ritual.

A wind-down ritual you will keep

  1. Set the hour. Dim the lights and put the phone down 30 minutes before bed.
  2. Slow down. Stretch, read or take a warm shower.
  3. Make it the cue. Take your magnesium with water at the same time each night, so it becomes your signal that the day is done.

Questions

How do I take it?

Take three capsules once daily, or as directed by your healthcare professional. Do not exceed the recommended dose.

Will it make me sleepy?

NuvaMag is a magnesium supplement, not a sleep medicine. It is designed to support muscle relaxation and normal nervous system function as part of your evening routine.

When should I take it?

Cleveland Clinic suggests taking magnesium about 30 minutes before bed. The NuvaMag label says three capsules once daily, or as directed by your healthcare professional.

How long does one bottle last?

One bottle has 90 capsules. At three capsules a day, that is 30 days.

Who should talk to a doctor first?

Anyone who is pregnant or nursing, has a kidney condition, or takes prescription medication. Magnesium can interact with some antibiotics, osteoporosis drugs and diuretics.

Before you start. Talk to your healthcare professional if you are pregnant or nursing, have kidney problems, or take prescription medication. NIH sets 350 mg a day as the upper limit for magnesium from supplements, and higher amounts can cause diarrhea, nausea and stomach cramps.

It's never too late for a new beginning.
