What's in HydraZen? A Simple Guide to Each Scoop
One scoop of HydraZen adds four electrolytes to your water: 200 mg of potassium, 100 mg of sodium, 40 mg of calcium and 20 mg of magnesium. It also has seven B vitamins and 10 calories, with no sugar and no caffeine. Water stays the main event. HydraZen adds back minerals you lose in sweat.
What electrolytes are
MedlinePlus, from the US National Library of Medicine, describes electrolytes as minerals in your blood and other body fluids that carry an electric charge. The common ones are sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride and phosphorus.
They affect how much water is in your body, the acidity of your blood, and how your nerves and muscles work. You lose electrolytes when you sweat. MedlinePlus also notes that water alone does not contain a significant amount of them.
Water comes first
Water is the foundation of hydration, and HydraZen is built to go with it, not replace it. MedlinePlus gives a general guide of 91 to 125 fl oz (2.7 to 3.7 liters) of water a day for adults, counting water from both food and drinks. There is no single target for everyone. Your needs depend on your age, size, activity level and health.
For most of the day, plain water is all you need. Electrolytes become more useful when you sweat a lot.
What is in one scoop
Every HydraZen flavor has the same formula. One scoop (5.4 g) provides:
| Nutrient | Per scoop | % Daily Value |
|---|---|---|
| Potassium | 200 mg | 4% |
| Sodium | 100 mg | 4% |
| Calcium | 40 mg | 3% |
| Magnesium | 20 mg | 5% |
| Sugar | None (sweetened with sucralose) | 0% |
| Caffeine | None | Not applicable |
| Calories | 10 | Not applicable |
The % Daily Value figures use the FDA Daily Values: 4,700 mg for potassium, 2,300 mg for sodium, 1,300 mg for calcium and 420 mg for magnesium. The FDA says 5% of the Daily Value or less per serving is low. That makes HydraZen a light, everyday mix rather than a high-sodium formula.
Seven B vitamins
Each scoop also provides about a third of the Daily Value for seven B vitamins. They are thiamin (0.40 mg), riboflavin (0.43 mg), niacin (5.2 mg), vitamin B6 (0.56 mg), folate (133 mcg DFE), vitamin B12 (0.80 mcg) and pantothenic acid (1.66 mg).
Other ingredients
The rest of the label lists polydextrose, citric acid, natural and artificial flavors, sucralose, calcium silicate and a fruit and vegetable blend for color.
How to read an electrolyte label
Electrolyte mixes vary a lot. These are the lines worth checking on any label, including ours:
- Sodium per serving. This is the biggest difference between mixes. Look at the milligrams and the % Daily Value.
- Sugar. Some mixes add a lot of sugar. MedlinePlus suggests choosing lower-calorie options, which have less sugar.
- Caffeine. Some flavors include tea or added caffeine. Check the panel, not just the flavor name.
- Serving size and water. Note how much water each scoop is meant for, so the taste and strength come out right.
- Daily limit. Look for the most servings the label allows in a day.
When to reach for electrolytes, and when water is enough
MedlinePlus offers simple guidance for exercise:
- For workouts under 60 minutes, water is most often all you need.
- Water is best for the first hour. After that, a drink with electrolytes helps you replace what you lose.
- For a less intense workout in the heat, water is your best choice. If you will exercise for a couple of hours, a drink that replaces salts and minerals can help.
- Drink before, during and after exercise, even if you do not feel thirsty. Light or pale yellow urine is a sign you are getting enough fluid.
Outside of exercise, a scoop can fit a long day outdoors, a travel day or a hot afternoon. HydraZen is a lighter mix, so for long, sweaty sessions, drink plenty of water as well.
Easy ways to fit it into your day
- A glass with breakfast, next to your morning coffee.
- A bottle during or right after a workout that runs past an hour.
- An extra bottle on travel days, when it is easy to forget to drink.
- A cold glass on a hot afternoon spent outside.
How to mix HydraZen
- Add one scoop to 14 to 20 oz of water.
- Shake or stir until it dissolves.
- For all-day sipping, mix two scoops into 28 to 40 oz.
The label says not to have more than 5 scoops in 24 hours. Keep the lid tight and use the tub within 90 days, as the label advises.

Who should check with a doctor first
The label says HydraZen is not intended for people with a medical condition. Talk to your doctor before using it if you are pregnant or nursing, or if you take any medicine. If you have been told to limit sodium or potassium, ask your doctor first too.
HydraZen is made in a facility that also handles milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans and sesame.
Watch for signs of heat illness when you exercise in hot weather. MedlinePlus lists heavy sweating, tiredness, thirst and muscle cramps as early signs. Extreme confusion or passing out are signs of heatstroke, which is an emergency: call 911.
