Best Time to Take Magnesium: Morning or Night?
Search for the best time to take magnesium and you will find confident answers pointing in every direction. The honest answer is simpler: there is no proven best hour. What matters most is taking it every day, at a time that fits your life. Here is how to choose, plus a few practical details most guides skip.
The short answer
Take magnesium at whatever time you will remember daily. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, which publishes the US government's magnesium fact sheet, gives no recommended time of day for healthy adults. Magnesium is a cofactor in more than 300 enzyme systems, from muscle and nerve function to energy production, and it is your steady daily intake that keeps them supplied. Consistency beats clock-watching.
Morning or night: how to choose
Evening, as part of a wind-down
Many people take magnesium glycinate in the evening, with dinner or an hour or two before bed. Magnesium supports normal muscle and nerve function, which makes it a natural fit for a calm end to the day: lights lower, screens away, a few slow breaths. If your evenings are the most predictable part of your day, this is a good slot.
Morning, if that is when habits stick
If your evenings change from day to day, take it with breakfast, next to something you already do every morning. A capsule you take every morning beats one you only remember most nights.
Should you take magnesium with food?
Taking magnesium with a meal is an easy way to keep it comfortable. According to the NIH fact sheet, the most common effect of too much magnesium from supplements is diarrhea, sometimes with nausea or cramping. The NIH lists carbonate, chloride, gluconate and oxide as the forms most often linked to diarrhea. Pairing any form with food helps too.
How much magnesium do you need?
Adults need 310 to 420 mg of magnesium a day from all sources: 310 to 320 mg for women and 400 to 420 mg for men, depending on age. Much of that can come from food, with leafy greens, beans, nuts, seeds and whole grains among the best sources. The NIH sets the upper limit for magnesium from supplements and medicines at 350 mg a day for adults. That limit does not include the magnesium in your food.
How to read a magnesium glycinate label
Magnesium labels show two numbers, and it is easy to mix them up. On the NuvaMag Supplement Facts panel, one serving of three capsules reads: Magnesium 275 mg (from 2,500 mg Magnesium Glycinate).
- 2,500 mg is the weight of the whole compound: magnesium bound to the amino acid glycine.
- 275 mg is the elemental magnesium, the part that counts toward your daily needs. It is 65% of the Daily Value, and it is the number to compare between products.
A full serving of NuvaMag sits under the 350 mg supplement limit. If you also take other products with magnesium, such as a multivitamin or an electrolyte mix (HydraZen adds 20 mg per scoop), add them up.
When timing really matters: medicines
This is the one area where the clock counts. Magnesium can reduce how well some medicines are absorbed. The NIH fact sheet advises:
- Tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics: take the antibiotic at least 2 hours before, or 4 to 6 hours after, a magnesium supplement.
- Bisphosphonates such as alendronate: keep magnesium at least 2 hours apart.
If you take diuretics, acid-reducing medicines (proton pump inhibitors) or any prescription, or if you have kidney problems or are pregnant or nursing, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before adding magnesium.
Make it a ritual, not a rule
The best schedule is the one you barely have to think about. Anchor your capsules to something you already do: dinner, brushing your teeth, the kettle going on in the morning. Missed a day? Simply start again tomorrow. That is the point of a ritual. It is always there to come back to.
NuvaMag is three capsules of magnesium glycinate a day, giving 275 mg of elemental magnesium. It is part of our Midnight Entry evening ritual and the Calm collection. Shop NuvaMag.

Frequently asked questions
Is it better to take magnesium in the morning or at night?
Neither has been shown to be better for healthy adults. Choose the time you will keep: evening suits a wind-down routine, and morning suits people whose evenings vary.
Can I take magnesium every day?
Yes. Magnesium is meant to be part of your daily intake from food and supplements. Follow the label and stay within the 350 mg a day limit for supplemental magnesium unless your healthcare professional advises otherwise.
Can I split my dose?
NuvaMag's directions are three capsules once daily. If you would prefer to spread them across the day, check with your healthcare professional first.
Does magnesium glycinate make you sleepy?
It is not a sedative. Magnesium supports normal muscle and nerve function, which is why many people like it as part of an evening routine. For what the research does and does not show, read Magnesium Glycinate for Sleep: What the Evidence Shows.
